North Country Garden Group Forming!!
Farming & Forestry Resources coming soon
So much to know, so much to share!

Gardening in the North Country is nourishing, fulfilling and at times mystifying, with our short growing season!

Let's come together to share our knowledge, see what others are doing, and maybe help each other out some!

Herbs, perennials, vegetables, flowers, medicinals, mycology, fruits, wild pollinators and beekeeping, permaculture principles, composting, garden input supplies and gear, and more.  Our limit is the full bounty of Nature!

** PLEASE RSVP (see below) TO JOIN US! **

Get together with other gardeners to visit their gardens, share information and advice, swap stories, and maybe even arrange mutual assistance for projects.

This group will meet informally every other weekend for the Summer into Fall seasons.
The events will rotate from one household's gardens to another over that time. (Let us know if you'd like to host one!)

Participating gardeners enjoy the first Garden Group gathering on June 8, 2025 in Colton NY. 🌿
The first event (see description below) was a lovely day in the host gardens, and everyone chatted for quite some time afterwards, it was a real success!  Soooooooo much information was shared between us all, it was quite inspiring!  And, participants left with bulbs shared by one kind soul, and wild pollinator homes built as an Eagle Scout project out of the Huevelton Boy Scout troop!

JUNE 22 GARDEN GROUP GATHERING
Sunday, June 22, 1 to 3 pm

For our second Garden Group event, on June 22, Erica LaFountain and her mother Hanneke LaFountain will host garden visits at their homes next door to each other in Potsdam.

As a Community Horticulture Educator for Cornell Cooperative Extension, Erica coordinates the Master Gardener Volunteer program for the county and offers classes, answers questions, and writes articles to support St. Lawrence County gardens of all kinds. With her husband, artist James Gonzalez, she established a vegetable garden when she returned to the area 12 years ago. They’ve since added an orchard, chickens, and perennial gardens, having their share of mistakes and successes along the way. Erica likes to experiment in the vegetable garden with occultation (tarping), no-till, fast-acting compost, and interplanting with flowers.

Hanneke has gardened next door for decades in a sloped, bright garden that has evolved to be a wild melee of vegetables and flowers. Come check out her black walnut stand, rhubarb “hedge”, the mix of edible and ornamental plants and shrubs, and how she has battled the dreaded bishop’s weed.

CHAT n CHEW
After the garden tour there will be light snacks (you're welcome to bring some to share, too), and discussion of what we saw on the "tour" and what you would like see, learn about, or get help with in the future. 🌿

Space for 15 people.
RSVP to reserve a spot and receive directions.

RAIN OR SHINE
Come prepared for the weather with appropriate footwear and clothing. If it's raining, we'll spend more time under shelter, but still poke around the gardens for a bit!

JUNE 8 2025 INITIAL GATHERING
Sunday, June 8, 1 to 3 pm

The first tour is at a Joya & Dwight's home in Colton, and will feature a food-forest garden in its infancy, on a plot that had gone unmaintained for a decade or more. There are young locally-sourced fruit trees and shrubs for berries and nuts, and a small raised veggie garden.

The garden is set against mostly-maple woods with a spring-fed pond nearby. You'll see a way to create raised beds for almost no materials cost, learn a surprising use for Virginia Creeper, and see what cardboard + wood chip mulch looks like after composting down for three years.

Demonstrations are possible of an electric wood-chipper and battery powered lawn mower, chain saw, and string trimmer.
